Busy Weeks Don't Always Make for Pretty Pictures

This week I've been busy working on a display for my local library. I'll be setting it up tomorrow!

A couple months ago I spoke to the Branch Manager at the Pearl City Library about displaying some of my work from the Molokai residency. They don't have much wall space, but they do occasionally show work from local artists on some tables they have set up (currently displaying books, of course!) so we decided to roll with that and see how it goes!

During my final presentation on Molokai, which was also held at the library, I had a similar layout on the tables there. (You can read more about that here.) But since this will be a static display rather than a live presentation, I'll be adding some info cards to help tell the story of my experience.

Here's a peek at part of it, as laid out on my living room floor with the aid of some masking-tape-as-table-edges:

Don't mind the toys in the corner! They won't be part of the display, ha ha.

I also finished up crocheting the full sized shawl sample just in time, so it's on the blocking boards as we speak and will hopefully be part of the display as well!

We discussed me offering another artist's talk like I did on Molokai, but after chatting about it, we decided on simply offering a crochet class instead. So that'll be happening on June 8th! If you're here in Hawaii, you can find out more about the class here!

I'm really looking forward to teaching an in person in class again. It's been a while!

Yesterday was our regular library visit day, so I asked the kiddo to take a picture of me with the class sign and this is the best I got, lol:

Luckily, I don't have crazy eyes on the flyer! 😆

Classes are always fun, though, so I'm excited.

I'm also excited that I'll get to share the story of my time on Molokai again. Honestly, I'm a little bit nervous about taking up that much space! I mean, it's going to be on display in the library for the entire month of June!!

But I'm hoping it will help encourage others to look for colors and textures to inspire them in their own backyards and during their daily commutes, whether it's noticing the flowering trees overhanging the road they drive along or fallen petals and wildflowers growing in the cracks of the sidewalks under their feet. Or it could be birds or bugs or bricks or the color of the sky or the pattern of rust on a park bench!

There really is inspiration all around us, if only we remember to look for it.

I mean, I AM working on a crochet design inspired by beach crabs, right!?

And maybe there will be enough interest that I can make teaching crochet classes at the library a regular thing. You never know!

So wish me luck!

I'll be back next time with pictures of the display to share, I'm sure. Oh and if you'd like a quick overview, I did also set up a new webpage for my Molokai work. You can check it out at www.crochetcetera.com/molokairesidency (it's a work in progress, so you'll probably see some changes if you come back to it later).

That's about it for me! And I do need to finish those info cards. Though I do have these done!

No "pretty" pictures to share this time, really, but then not every week can be filled with fabulous FO images! Although if you have any ideas on how to make blocking pictures prettier, I'm all ears, ha ha.

I hope you have a really great weekend. We're officially beginning summer break tomorrow afternoon—with a trip to the beach! Camping, actually. Smores all around!

P.S. Ms. Dipper hatched her third round of babies this week and I captured this gem! Baby's first cockroach!! 😆

Y'all! I finally got to go SEE it!!! Ta da!!! Getting back home from my trip to FL/KS/FL was... an adventure. There were canceled flights and ground stops (one was for a rocket launch!) and a nine-hour layover in a bonus city. All with a nine-year-old in tow. I'm all tuckered out! And we only got home just yesterday afternoon. BUT. I was still really excited to finally get to go see the Aurora Borealis exhibition!!! I dropped off the two pieces I submitted for jurying just a couple days...

This week, I'm writing to you from Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where I'm taking a leadership and development course alongside my husband. His classes are all about preparing him for his next job. The class I'm in is specifically designed for military spouses, to help inform and prepare us to be able to better support our spouses, ourselves, and our families—and the Soldiers and their families, too, in this next role. It's... a lot! I'm a bit overwhelmed. Over-stimulated. Exhausted. But it's...

Last week was a bit of a vulnerable share, showing you the work I was submitting to two juried art shows, but I really do believe in championing our own creations! Choosing myself first, declaring my work worthy enough to invest in the submission process, maybe has even more value than being chosen by someone else. That said, it sure does feel good to get a yes! And to get two yeses? Wow, what a week! I'm delighted to share that one tapestry was invited for the 15th Annual Abstracts Only show...
