Yay, we made the trip!! I wasn't sure that we would be able to make it happen when I first found out I was invited to be part of the show, but I'm so very glad we did! This is actually the first picture I have of me with my husband and my art. Long time coming, eh? (Yes, those are scorpions on his shirt; he was on the Scorpion Team at NTC when we lived at Fort Irwin.) Here's a zoomed out view from inside the gallery: Seascape I is on the far right. There were a few other fiber/textile pieces, plus a lot of paintings, some photography, and a few sculptures. But no other crocheting that I saw! Maybe no knitting, either, now that I think about it... It was such a cool show, though! I love abstract art. It's just so... emotive! The gallery itself was also pretty neat. The building is round! I could have walked around it in endless circles for hours and kept noticing new things. There were so many beautiful colors and textures! You can see more pictures and read all about our latest adventure on the Big Island here, if you'd like. And if you'd like to see even more of the artwork, be sure to check out the online store. Even if you're not interested in or able to make a purchase, browsing through the exhibit shop gives you a pretty good feel for the show. Of course, so does the book! I didn't get to see it until we got into the gallery, but it's really nice to be able to sit down and read more about all the different works and the artists who created them. Plus there's just always something extra fun about seeing my name and my work in print! Ah, what an adventure. If you have the time, you really should go check out my longer post on Patreon. It's chock-full of pictures! Our visit to the Big Island may have been short, but we saw a lot of things and had a lot of fun. I'm sad that it may be our last time there, but you never know! (I'm still holding out hope that I'll get into one of the National Parks residency programs.) In other news this week, I got started on the spinning for my new Molokai Tapestry! I'll be sharing more about that soon (along with more pictures, of course) on Patreon, so stay tuned! Actually, if you have joined me there as either a free or paid member, be sure to check out the community chat because I share daily-ish updates there. Let's see if this link works to take you there? You'll have to be logged in. If you're not already following along with me on Patreon, you can join me as a free member here to check things out! Okay, I think that's probably enough from me for today. I promised myself I wouldn't gush about the art gallery all over again since I already wrote one really chatty post about it! I took over a hundred pictures in our two days there, though, ha ha, so I had to do something with all of that adventuresome goodness! The Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was, of course, picturesque as always. Between the park and the art gallery, I suppose it's no wonder I left with tons of photos, right?
All right. I'm gonna go do some spinning now. By this time next week, I hope to be well into the crocheting or maybe even finished with it! Wish me luck. The Hawaiʻi Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition submission deadline looms soon ahead... Lots to do! -Connie P.S. This was my favorite picture from our trip; there's just something magical about this moment captured at dusk, beautiful bright red montbretia blooming with Kīlauea quietly smoking in the background... |
Seeker of beauty and joy in the cracks of mundanity, inviting you along for adventures through texture and color!
This morning I’m sitting beachside on the south shore of Oahu, writing to you in a word doc because I have no internet connection. And I’m okay with that. Of course, that means I probably won’t actually send this email until the afternoon! But that’s okay, too. I finished my secret squirrel yarn for the spinning magazine and we had a break in the rain, so I brought the finished hank to the beach for a little morning photoshoot. The light wasn’t quite optimal, being low and kind of behind, but...
Happy brand new year, my friends! Do you have anything cool planned for 2026? Not so much on the cool side, but it is what it is, our big thing for this coming year is our next PCS (Permanent Change of Duty Station). This summer we expect to be moving back to Georgia for the second time, to Fort Benning again. Maybe living on post this time, though? We'll see. But before that happens, I'm kicking off the year with another big, capital A, Fiber Art thing: I've had THREE pieces juried into the...
This week I got started on a new project for an upcoming issue of Spin Off magazine and I'm absolutely delighted that I've been given permission to share a few sneak peeks and behind the scenes views of the process as I'm working on it! Whoo hoo! I really appreciate not having to work in complete secret because I'm the most excited about a project when I'm in the middle of the ideation and creation phase. That's when all the good photo ops happen, too! Until the end for the FO pictures, of...
