En Plein Air Report and Night Sky Project Progress

The week nearly got away from me again, but I caught it by the tail end!

Last weekend's en plein air event was an adventure and a half.

You can read more about it here if you'd like more details (and to see all my pictures), but here it is in a nutshell: got lost in the toolies of Callaway Gardens and was late to get started, but was inspired enough by the sunflowers in Cason's Garden to power through my spinning and finish this cute little piece on time:

Ta da!

It was a LONG day, but I am now battle tested, ha ha!

So I'm considering doing another plein air event next weekend - IF I can get permission and registered for it. We'll see. I think I might prefer just going to some scenic spot and spinning in public without the added stress of the structured event, but it was also kind of a fun challenge!

What do you think? Would you make performance art out of your crocheting?? 😆

Since I last wrote to you, I also got started on my spinning for the new Night Sky inspired project and should be ready to start crocheting soon, yay!

Here are a few photos from the process so far:

Black fiber with pops of color on blending board.
Blue and black rolags and fiber prepared for spinning to create a fade between the colors.
Dark navy blue singles spun on an e-spinner.
Black singles with pops of purple and white on an e-spinner.
Black singles on a bobbin laying atop the fiber and rolags prepared for spinning the second singles.
Second singles in process of being spun on e-spinner with finished singles on bobbin in background.
Finished plied yarn showing the shift from black to navy blue.
Finished black and blue handspun yarn on a niddy noddy.

Fiber prep (blending, making rolags), spinning AND plying all got done. And I've got well over 400 yards here, so that should be more than enough. (Maybe a bit too much more than enough, but we'll see how it goes.)

I am really looking forward to seeing how it works up. And also hoping it looks as cool in reality as it does in my imagination! Wish me luck!!

All right, I'm keeping this short because we have a swim meet starting soon and then, of course, I'll be donning the Cookie Monster onesie again tonight for the trick-or-treators in our neighborhood.

Cheers!

P.S. For those of you who have been waiting with bated breath to see me dressed up all in blue, here you go! 😘

Last week got away from me before I had the time to sit down and write to you, so here it is nearly the end of October already somehow! Tonight I'm dressing up as Cookie Monster, lol, and manning our cookie themed Bronco for Trunk-or-Treat. Wish me luck? I've wrapped up a couple projects lately, namely the project for PieceWork magazine, which I mailed out last week and finalized the writing for yesterday. So that felt good to complete! I also finally got one of my last fiber artworks spun...

Last weekend was the opening reception for the annual Columbus Artists' Guild Member's Exhibition. Since it wasn't a juried show and I simply had to pay to submit one or two pieces of my choosing, I decided to do something a little different for this one. I chose to pair a fiber artwork with one of the photographs I took of some flowers that helped inspire the tapestry. Flowers: Fiber Art: The flowers are humble little blooms. Sneezeweed, in fact, they're called. Which I think is rather...

I just finished up a special little project. Well. Actually. I hope it's just the beginning of a special little project! One of my very first self-published crochet patterns was for some thread crochet flower hairclips I was making during my last days of attempting to sell at local markets. Each one had a double layer of five petals and I added a button to the center, too. They were cute! Every so often I revisit this pattern. Usually, it's just to use up a little bit of leftover yarn. I've...
