Just A Quick Update (I Gotta Finish Packing!)

I say that, a "quick" update, but then sometimes I go and get to talking, don't I!? 😆

We'll see, I suppose, how much I end up writing.

It's been a reasonably productive week, but we're packing up today for a short little trip over to Hilo on The Big Island so we can see my work in the Abstract show! I'm really looking forward to it, sort of a mini vacay, right?

Carson is, of course, hoping to see some nēnē while we're there (the Hawaiian goose) because they aren't found naturally on our island anymore, unfortunately. Maybe at the zoo, though?? We still haven't gone yet! Will have to check it out sometime.

So anyway, you can bet I'll be sharing about our visit next week! We leave later this afternoon (which is why I need to keep this short, ha ha).

I DO want to take a few minutes to share an update on the unscripted florals inspired scarf, though—it's finished, hooray!

She's had her bath and is currently on the blocking boards:

I got a good extra 7" in length with blocking, but my focus was on getting those dotted lines and stripes nice and neat, so it might even stretch a little longer with wear.

This is also the first time I've blocked something square in a long time. It takes a lot more time and patience to do it this way!

(Don't forget that you can get access to the first draft of my written instructions over on Patreon as a pattern preview.)

After we get back from Hilo, I'll start working on finalizing all my numbers and getting everything into a pdf after I take some photos so I can send it out to my tech editor. Then it'll be time for testing!! (Are you in my testing pool on Yarnpond, by the way? If not, you can sign up for free here.)

The other thing I've been working on this week is one last tapestry, I hope, that I can submit for the Hawai‘i Craftsmen Annual Statewide Exhibition. I have to finish by the end of the month, though!

This one is inspired by an experience I had while visiting the Kalaupapa Lookout during my artist residency on Molokai.

You can read more about it here, if you'd like (it's a public post, for now, at least) and see a bit more of the process behind taking my inspiration and a pile of fiber like this:

To a beautiful blend of pre-drafted fiber ready for spinning!

(I absolutely cannot WAIT to start spinning for this tapestry.)

It's going to be so pretty! Well, I hope I can do the moment justice anyway. Wish me luck!

Now. I'd better go finish up packing.

Cheers!

P.S. Before I go, here's a picture of our two boys, MJ and Waddles, nearly full grown now! They've been "play fighting" since they were itty bitties, but I doubt they'll keep hanging out together much longer. I'll be sad when I no longer recognize them because they're not two peas in a pod anymore, but full grown roosters with their own territories! What fun it's been watching them grow up, though.

This morning I’m sitting beachside on the south shore of Oahu, writing to you in a word doc because I have no internet connection. And I’m okay with that. Of course, that means I probably won’t actually send this email until the afternoon! But that’s okay, too. I finished my secret squirrel yarn for the spinning magazine and we had a break in the rain, so I brought the finished hank to the beach for a little morning photoshoot. The light wasn’t quite optimal, being low and kind of behind, but...

Happy brand new year, my friends! Do you have anything cool planned for 2026? Not so much on the cool side, but it is what it is, our big thing for this coming year is our next PCS (Permanent Change of Duty Station). This summer we expect to be moving back to Georgia for the second time, to Fort Benning again. Maybe living on post this time, though? We'll see. But before that happens, I'm kicking off the year with another big, capital A, Fiber Art thing: I've had THREE pieces juried into the...

This week I got started on a new project for an upcoming issue of Spin Off magazine and I'm absolutely delighted that I've been given permission to share a few sneak peeks and behind the scenes views of the process as I'm working on it! Whoo hoo! I really appreciate not having to work in complete secret because I'm the most excited about a project when I'm in the middle of the ideation and creation phase. That's when all the good photo ops happen, too! Until the end for the FO pictures, of...
